Letter from the Executive Director

Dear Members and Friends,

As fall arrives, I am glad to be able to share exciting news on several fronts including public policy developments, new recycling initiatives and our annual fundraising celebration.

Public Policy

Last month the IRC joined a broad coalition of businesses, governments and non-profits in support of Senate Resolution 251. You can read the resolution and see a list of supporters here. The IRC was pleased to have the opportunity to promote the economic and environmental benefits of recycling at the federal level. We hope that this resolution is a first step towards action on Capitol Hill to advance sustainable materials management.

Also, on October 4, the IRC will launch a food waste compost stakeholder dialogue with a meeting to be hosted at the IRC office in downtown Indianapolis. Eli Lilly & Co. and Piazza Produce will present, as will IDEM. The IRC will also highlight the Super Bowl 2012 food waste composting pilot project. If your company or organization is interested in this issue and you would like to attend please email Paula Smith, the IRC’s compost dialogue facilitator @ paulamsmith89@gmail.com to receive additional information and to RSVP.

Finally, the IRC is participating in a series of stakeholder meetings to discuss the role of Solid Waste Management Districts in Indiana. This dialogue and an upcoming legislative study committee hearing on the issue are first steps leading to an anticipated legislative proposal in 2012. Feel free to contact me (carey@indianarecycling.org) if you have any questions about the process. We will keep our members informed if and when a bill works its way through the legislature as the 2012 session begins in January.

Public Space Recycling

As part of our Public Space Recycling Bin Grant Program, we recently developed a public space recycling best practices toolkit titled, A Guide to Recycling On the Go in Indiana. The toolkit is available on our website and we encourage anyone who would like to start a public space recycling program to utilize this new resource. Thanks to the Alcoa Foundation for its generous support of this program.

Recycle-Bowl – K12 Recycling

Please note information below about Recycle-Bowl – a new K12 recycling competition hosted by KAB nationally and supported by the IRC in Indiana. Do you know of a teacher, student or parent who would like to spearhead a school recycling initiative? If so, this is the opportunity to utilize a turnkey program to facilitate that effort. We hope to see participation from across the state in this inaugural year of Recycle-Bowl. Additional details are provided below.

REVENT – November 12

The IRC’s fall event committee has been hard at work planning REVENT – a gathering to celebrate America Recycles Day and raise funds for the IRC. Details are below. We hope you will join us for this very special event!

Finally, I’d like to take the opportunity to thank our board of directors, staff, members, individual donors and sponsors for your commitment and dedication to the IRC. With your continued support we are measurably and substantially increasing our ability to serve our mission to advance waste reduction, reuse, recycling and composting in Indiana.

THANK YOU!

Carey Hamilton Executive Director

More people than ever before are snapping up internet-enabled smart phones and tablets. The numbers are climbing to 50% of the population and by all accounts will keep soaring. Recycle-Bowl

Are you looking for a fun and creative way to increase school recycling participation

Keep America Beautiful has launched “Recycle-Bowl,” the first comprehensive nationwide recycling competition for elementary, middle and high school students.

Registration for the recycling competition and benchmarking program is now open on the Recycle-Bowl website. The competition runs from October 17 through November 12. Participating schools will track and report how much recyclable material they collect for a chance to win prizes. At the close of the four-week competition, the school in each state that collects the most recyclable material per capita will win $1,000. A national champion will then be chosen from among the statewide winners to receive an additional grand prize of $2,500.

Community recycling coordinators can easily register whole school districts by completing a spreadsheet that will be imported into the registration database. Visit the Recycling Resources page for more information.

The inaugural Recycle-Bowl is sponsored by Nestlé Waters North America.

Staff on the Road….

IRC staff members Carey Hamilton and Katie Graham recently headed south to visit and learn more about Hilex Poly‘s facility in North Vernon, which includes the largest plastic bag recycling operation in the world. The trip also included a visit to IRC board member Matt Otte’s place of work, the City of Seymour Recycling Center.

Thanks to the folks at Hilex Poly and to Matt Otte for the informative tours of two very impressive operations!

As you’ve read here in recent months, the IRC worked with several stakeholders, including Senators Breaux and Kenley, to secure the release of these previously-frozen funds. According to administration officials, this was a one-time release of $500,000, therefore we will continue to support the use of this fund which incentivizes new green jobs and a more sustainable environment for Indiana.<br /> <br />We are also excited to tell you about our upcoming fall fundraiser, Mobius – A Celebration of Recycling with the IRC on November 6. This will be a fun, elegant evening and we hope to see you there. <br /> <br />Finally, we recently kicked-off our America Recycles Day Jr/High School video contest. Please share this exciting opportunity with all of the middle &amp; high school students and teachers you know and don’t forget to mention the cash prizes and awards ceremony! We are looking forward to once again tapping the talent and creativity of Hoosier students to convey an import environmental message – that recycling is one of the easiest ways to reduce your carbon footprint.<br /> <br />Details about these new developments and much more is included below. <br />As always, thank you for your support as we continue the IRC’s important work to advance source reduction, reuse, recycling and composting activities in Indiana!<br /><br />Carey Hamilton<br />Executive Director</p> <p><a class=”center” href=”index.php?page=august-2010/”>Back to top^</a> <img title=”Large Line Break” src=”/uploads/images/Newsletter/hr.gif” alt=”Large Line Break” width=”348″ height=”28″ /></p> <h2><a name=”New Member Welcome”></a>Welcome newest members of the IRC!</h2> <p> </p> <div style=”text-align: center;”>Ed Mahern<br /> Quality Printing <br />Teachers’ Treasures <br />Yellowbook<br /> <br />And Thank You To Our Returning Members!<br /> <br />Steven Boggs <br />Lori Kaplan <br /> <a title=”Washington, Indiana” href=”http://www.washingtonin.us/” target=”_blank”>The City of Washington, Indiana</a></div> <p><br />Listing in the “New &amp; Returning Members” section is voluntary.
